Frequently asked questions.

About the Meals

Do your meals contain any preservatives?

Nope! Our meals are nothing but natural - the act of dehydrating in and of itself preserves these meals.

How long does it take to prepare a meal?

Once you pour boiling water into the meal pouch, be sure to seal it then give it a few good squishes to make sure the water gets everywhere and everything is mixed together. After sitting sealed, for 15 - 20 minutes, it should be ready to go! Alternatively, you can throw it in a pot to rehydrate if you desire. The ease and simplicity of the meals is what makes them so great for backpacking meals or an easy car camping meal!

Are you using organic or locally sourced ingredients?

We use locally sourced ingredients for some produce and grains, but hope to grow in this arena as the business grows.

We use organic produce when the opportunity arises. A small portion of our produce comes from ANEW, a local organization that works to connect businesses with food distributers, or farmers that have too much food. ANEW has connected WME with a local organic distributer. We pick up produce from this distributer and in turn, make a donation to the Leftovers Foundation, one of Canada’s largest tech-enabled food rescue charities.

Can I use these meals for things other than backcountry adventures?

Absolutely, outside of backcountry adventures, these meals can be used for hunting trips, car camping, resort skiing, or a warm day hike lunch option! We also have folks purchase them for emergency kits in your house or car, and some take them as a healthy lunch option for work!

How many people does each bag feed?

Our small portions range from 470 - 590 calories. These are great portion sizes for many individuals out on an adventure, after all you have to fuel your body well to get after those peaks! Our regular portions (1.5 x a single) range from 705 - 890 calories. They are great for those who tend to be a bit hungrier, or for those extra strenuous days. If you are unsure, feel free to send us a note via our ‘contact us’ page, and we can figure it out together.

How should I store my meals?

Each meal is heat sealed to maintain its’ freshness. We recommend that once you receive your meals, you store them at room temperature, away from sunlight and moisture, until you are ready to head out on your adventure.

Manufacturing and Sustainability

How do you make the meals?

We make our meals in house, from scratch and in small batches.

Are the meal pouches compostable or recyclable?

Our meal pouches are compostable! We purchase our stand up pouches from TekPak, a company in Hamilton, Ontario. These pouches are omni-degradable and do not depend on heat, water, sunlight, or oxygen, in order to degrade. They simply rely on ever-present microbes in soil or water. One of the challenges with regards to what is compostable or not, is that this varies city to city - this means that for us here in Calgary, AB, these pouches are home compostable, i.e. your backyard compost (industrial composting will not yet recognize them). That being said, even if you throw these in the garbage, they will still decompose within 14 months in a landfill. Please remember that even though these pouches are compostable, you still need to pack them out!

What are your sustainability practices?

Although we are making our best efforts, this is an area that we will always be learning and evolving in. Currently we use compostable packaging in an effort to minimize waste. Down the line we hope to be able to offer our meals in a zero-waste model for those who are keen, or in bulk packaging for those getting out with a larger group of friends.

Given that food waste in Canada is so prolific, we aim to use upcycled produce when the opportunity arises. When we are able to do this, we donate a portion back to the Leftovers foundation, one of Canada’s largest tech-enabled food rescue charities. We also try and use locally sourced produce and grains when possible.

As mentioned above, we will ever be growing in this arena, and if you have any suggestions or feedback for us, we invite you to reach out to us at sarah@wildmountaineats.com.
